Sewage Backup during a Flood
Sewage backup is the cherry on the rotten Sunday of a flood damage cleanup project. As if it isn't bad enough you are faced with the prospect of cleaning up after thousands of gallons of water that have coursed through your home now you also have to deal with raw sewage that may have been left behind in your home. The basic rule of thumb for cleaning up sewage backup during a flood restoration project is to hire a professional.
Here are a couple preventative measures you can do to prevent sewage backup from entering your home. The first is to hire a plumber and install a shut off valve which can be either manually or automatically turn off your plumbing system from the towns in case of sewage backup. Before installing a shut off valve for this purpose you must check with your local water department. This is not a do it yourself project and hiring a plumber is a necessity. The second thing you can do is to raise or remove any appliance in your basement that is connected to the plumbing system. This includes sinks, washing machines, and toilets. Since the basement is the most likely place that will be subject to sewage backup by removing or raising these appliances you greatly reduce the chance of having sewage backup contributing to you flood damage cleanup project.
Since most people do not concentrate enough on preventative measures they probably did not have a shut off valve installed or remove appliances from the basement. Since no preventative measures were taken against sewage backup you are now faced with the prospect of cleaning up the mess. First of all assume anything that has been in contact with sewage is contaminated. The flood damage cleanup will begin by throwing away a lot of your things. Most of the time, any foam rubber, paper, or large carpets will be discarded. The following items should always be thrown away, food, makeup, medication, all stuffed animals, bedding, and upholstered furniture.
Many people believe that once an area is cleaned it is also disinfected. This is a wrong and dangerous assumption to make. Cleaning is the first step which involves washing, sweeping, and drying. Unfortunately the job is only half done at this point. A disinfectant is a chemical which will reduce harmful bacteria to the point that it would no longer cause a person to become sick. Before disposing of the sewage backup contact your local health department and ask what the procedure is. Often after a flood there will be special trash collections for material that may be contaminated. Do not simply throw the sewage infested material away with last weeks newspapers as it can cause sickness in anyone that comes into contact with it.
As mentioned in the first paragraph a good solution to sewage backup is to hire a company that specializes in this. While you may be able to complete the project by yourself you are putting yourself at risk while doing so. Becoming sick by saving a few dollars is not a good idea unless you do not have any other options.
